Overview

Bookbinding Workshop is a 3 credit studio course. It satisfies the Artistic Experience AOI and may be used as a graphic design program elective, studio art elective or general art elective. This course requires Sophomore standing or instructor permission.

The course is an introduction to the craft and design of a variety of book forms using traditional and non-traditional binding techniques. Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, discussions, readings, exercises, projects, and class critiques.

The purpose of Book Binding Workshop is for you to gain knowledge and skill in the applied craft of book binding and to enable the development of a critical perspective on the mechanical and formal aspects of book structures. You are encouraged to engage in the formal exploration of the book forms demonstrated in class and to pursue research relevant to contemporary book arts, technical information into binding materials and conceptual and formal issues related to book structure and its relationship to content.

Bookbinding Workshop is a project based studio course. It offers you the opportunity to learn basic book binding techniques and gain sufficient technical knowledge to create a variety of bound book structures. Books planned for demonstration/production in the course are: pamphlet stitch, linked folio, continuous strip accordion, Japanese 4-hole, link stitch and long stitch. If time permits stiff leaf album, modular hinged, Coptic and Japanese multi-section bindings may be explored. Course activities include lectures, demonstrations, discussions, readings, exercises, projects, and class critiques. Specific course content and schedule are subject to change and/or modification.
